We are very honored to welcome Corentin Fivet – Professor of architecture and structural design at the Structural Xploration Lab, EPFL, Lausanne – on Tuesday, March 19, 2023 from 6:00-7:30 pm in our upcoming Constructive Conversations event.
Title: "Waste no More – The needed (re-)discovery of the intrinsic value of disused construction products"
When: Tuesday, 19/03 at 6pm
Where: ILEK, Pfaffenwaldring 14, 70569 Stuttgart
After the lecture, we invite you to join us for a small get-together. There will be snacks and drinks while you have the opportunity to talk and socialise with all the participants. This will be a wonderful opportunity to share ideas about the topic and make new connections.

Abstract
This lecture is a first attempt at arguing for an »intelligence of art« in computational design. It will do so by introducing the notion of design as the creation of novelty and will ask the question how this novelty is produced: is it a result of computational data processing or are there other forces at play?
The term »intelligence of art« has been introduced by art historian Thomas Crow in 1999 and denotes the immeasurably multi-faceted forms of human consciousness expressed in acts of creation. It shows a critical and very timely counterpoint to Herbert A. Simon’s seminal work on AI— The Sciences of the Artificial—published around the same time in 1996.
Following this argument, artistic-intuitive methods of exploration as well as visionary scenarios and images are introduced as primordial in the design process. Closely linked to this, is the cultural embedding of these visionary images in a historical-theoretical context. Ultimately, we will discuss whether projects conducted in computational design under the paradigm of pure rationale are also following a deeper and inherently culturally embedded agenda.
Short Bio
Corentin Fivet is Professor of architecture and structural design at EPFL where he develops computational methods and design processes to increase the circularity of building structures. Under his direction, the Structural Xploration Lab (SXL) is a frontrunner in the areas of structural optimization and groundbreaking large-scale demonstrator projects with reclaimed waste. Corentin Fivet holds a PhD degree from UCLouvain, Belgium. He completed a two-year postdoctoral stay at MIT, USA, prior to joining the Architecture Institute at EPFL in 2016.
