The goal of Research Cluster CRC 1244 is to find answers within the realm of the
built environment to the pressing ecological and social issues of our time. The strategic integration of adaptive elements in load-bearing structures, envelope systems and interior fittings is considered a promising approach.
CRC 1244 has been investigating the fundamentals, the potential and implications of adaptive structures and envelopes for a sustainable built environment.

Your area of responsibility
• Elaboration of actuation strategies for load-bearing structures in high-rise buildings
• Elaboration and dimensioning of actuator systems
• Developing feasible solutions for actuator integration
• Collaboration in the planning and testing on a demonstrator high-rise
building
• Use of digital tools
• Cooperation in academic self-administration
• Collaboration in application of research projects

Your profile
• Completed university studies (TU/TH/University)
• Excellent knowledge of structural engineering
• In-depth knowledge in the application and programming of analysis
software (ANSYS, Atena, Sofistik)
• Knowledge in the use of CAD programs (AutoCad, Rhino)
• Interest in the construction of building structures
• Experience in the design of load-bearing structures
• Organizational skills and communication skills
• Interest in interdisciplinary work
• Very good knowledge of English, very good knowledge of German

The remuneration falls in the group E-13, including social benefits of the public service. The position is to be filled from 01.03.2022 to 31.12.2024.

Student assistants

This work will investigate several bridge configurations and evaluate the potential of active control through EAT systems. The student assistant will be involved in:
• Analysis of the adaptation potential of beam, frame, truss, arch, suspension and cable-stayed bridges. This task involves modeling and simulation to evaluate how the structural capacity and serviceability performance can be improved through different actuation systems.
• Development of actuation strategies to extend the service life of existing and new bridges by mitigating the effect of heavy crossing to reduce the cyclic stress range.

Key requirements
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture and/or computer science.
Good knowledge of structural mechanics including dynamic analysis.
Knowledge of (or strong interest to learn) control theory and implementation.
Knowledge of (or strong interest to learn) MATLAB/Python programming language.
Advanced spoken and written English.

Position description in PDF

Within the framework of Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1244, a full-scale 6 × 10 m prototype of an adaptive rib-stiffened slab will be built to validate numerical findings.

A student assistant (HiWi) is therefore sought to support in:

  • design and modelling of small- and full-scale prototypes
  • fabrication of 3D-printed formwork
  • concrete casting as well as installation of reinforcements and post-tensioning system
  • communication with suppliers and technical collaborators

Note that the primary working language is English

Key requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil engineering
  • Good knowledge of finite element modelling (FEM). Fluency in visual programming (Grasshopper) is an advantage
  • Good knowledge in concrete design according to applicable code (e.g., Eurocode EN1992-1-1)
  • Practical experience in concrete mix design and casting is an advantage
  • Good knowledge of English and German

We are looking for students wishing to become research assistants for our subproject A07 in the area of adaptive kinetic envelopes and structures.

Your tasks:
• 3D modeling and rendering
• 3D printing and Prototyping

Requirements:
• Proficiency knowledge in 3D modelling, Rhino and Grasshopper
• Advanced knowledge of Vray or Enscape or Revit
• Creative ideas for photorealistic drawings
